All work… and all play…

Posted April 23rd, 2009. By Kim André.

…makes Kim a slow blogger.

Do not worry! Bombyx has been working hard as ever since our emulsion and chemicals arrived on monday. We’ve coated screens, exposed and done test prints… So why are there no updates? Where are the pictures?

Well, since we’ve been either in class, doing other projects, at work or printing/coating/cleaning/drinking beer… we haven’t had time to sit down and blog. Fear not though, tomorrow we’ll be printing a run of teaser-posters for the site, perhaps order our first batch of paper and when that is done, I’ll hopefully get to slow down enough to transfer pictures and write up a post about the past week. Everything has been documented and every step has been logged, analyzed and corrected to make sure we keep getting better as we go.

It’s been damn fun, and we’re just getting started!

Christmas eve, at Bombyx HQ

Posted April 18th, 2009. By Kim André.

Our screens arrived on thursday, all the way from the US of A. A lovely big box of mesh and aluminum.

I guess you could say we were happy…

Easter Holiday: A small break… and a small delay

Posted April 14th, 2009. By Kim André.

Bombyx has been taking a break for the last week or so.

Easter time is a time for reflection, a time for spending time with your family, it is the time to play cards, get drunk… and tell your friends you love them.

It’s time to put everything that has been on your mind on hold for a week or so, put your mind at ease, go out of town, smell the fresh air. Recharge your batteries for the ensuing months of hard work.

So, here is an update on the situation…

Test printing - Day One: an early start.

Posted April 1st, 2009. By Kim André.

Our suppliers have been lazy, so our test printing has been put back a few days. However, we are impatient as ever to get our hands dirty, so when we got to “borrow” some emulsion to try it out, we rushed at the opportunity.

So take a look at how that went!

The Office - s01e02

Posted March 24th, 2009. By Kim André.

So, we had been to Namsos and taken a big step towards our test printing stage. Now we needed to set things up properly, fix the vacuum-function on our table, wash away the old tape-residue and get the office ready for business.

The sun was shining…

…and Bombyx got to work.

Bombyx Roadtrip-Journal, Número Dos!

Posted March 24th, 2009. By Kim André.

07.45 in the morning, I drag myself out of bed, eat a slice of cold pizza, RUN!

We were going to Namsos to meet a screen printer, Arnljot. To learn and to do business. You see, he had offered to sell us his old equipment.

The kind of offer you can’t refuse.

Bombyx Roadtrip-journal…

Posted March 17th, 2009. By Kim André.

Good research will always save you a lot of time and frustration. Anyone who has tried putting together IKEA furniture, when you’ve thrown away the instruction-booklet, knows that. While you eventually learn from your mistakes and might get an OK result, it’s never quite right is it? So we wanted to get some advise about what we need to consider in our upcoming trials, not only while printing, but when doing the pre-print work. So we made a trip to the nearest screen printer, PS Serigrafi to hopefully learn something.

Bombyx Exposed! (but not quite yet)

Posted March 17th, 2009. By Kim André.

We need to be able to expose our screens, and any old lamp won’t do the job, not good enough for us! =) So we did a little research and realized buying a 105×75 cm glass-plate was expensive. So much so that hopping on the bus to IKEA and getting a glass-top table was the better choice.

Let’s take a look at how our exposure-rig is shaping up…

The Office - s01e01

Posted March 16th, 2009. By Kim André.

Every business worth the ink in which they’ve signed their company-contracts needs an office. We think we’re worth our ink (at least we plan on buying a whole lot of it soon), but our bank accounts don’t reflect our ambitions. Thankfully though we study at Norges Kreative Fagskole, who rock enough to grant our wishes. The old photo-studio at NKF has been mostly vacant since the Photographers got a new, shiny studio, so we sent a mail to Mona, the principal, and thankfully we got the OK. =)

So let us give you all a tour!

From the archives: building the press

Posted March 15th, 2009. By Kim André.

When we started thinking about this project, we realized that we had to make a lot of the equipment ourselves. Not only to save on money, but because we wanted our equipment to be tailored to our specific needs. We also feel that building everything ourselves adds to the experience and would be a lot more fun than just picking everything of the shelves.

Bombyx is about challenging ourselves!

So, I spent a week in February back home, building our press.
